Balkan regional road infrastructure development
Overview
Infrastructure development projects are underway in Montenegro and Republika Srpska to improve regional road networks.
In Montenegro, officials inaugurated the reconstruction of the 14-kilometer Zaborje — Jasenovo Polje section of the Nikšić—Plužine main road. Nikšić Mayor Marko Kovačević noted the project aims to improve connectivity and safety. Minister of Transport Radoš Zečević announced that 15 million euros will be allocated for the next 7.4 km section from Zagorje to Seljanovo, as part of a long-term goal to modernize the route from Podgorica to Šćepan Polje.
In Republika Srpska, a 12.6 million KM rehabilitation project is scheduled for the MI-108 highway, covering the Rebrovac – Čelinac – Kotor Varoš route. Funded by the World Bank under the Sustainable, Integrated and Safe Road Infrastructure (SISRI) initiative, the project involves rehabilitating approximately 27.66 kilometers of road. Construction is expected to last 540 days and will focus on asphalt renewal, drainage, and traffic safety.
Further expansion in Republika Srpska includes the construction of the 40-kilometer Banja Luka-Prijedor highway, which Minister of Transport and Communications Zoran Stevanović expects to complete by the end of 2028. Following a site visit to the Kuljani interchange, Stevanović noted that construction permits for an additional 3.2 kilometers are expected shortly. The project utilizes a concession model involving the Chinese company Shandong Hi-Speed International, with Everit as the main contractor. The highway aims to reduce the travel distance between Banja Luka and Prijedor from 56 km to approximately 40 km, with potential future extensions toward the Croatian border.
