Balkan statistical capacity development

Overview

Moldova and North Macedonia are working to modernize their national statistical systems through international cooperation and alignment with global standards.

In Moldova, the National Bureau of Statistics is aligning its systems with European Union standards as part of the country’s accession process. Efforts include reviewing the National Accession Program for 2025–2029, increasing institutional capacity by hiring specialists, and integrating statistical and geospatial data through dialogue with Eurostat.

In North Macedonia, the National Bank is enhancing its analytical capacities through cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Recent developments include a major revision of balance of payments and financial accounts statistics, achieving compliance with the SDDS Plus standard, and developing an external statistics data warehouse supported by the European Union. The Bank is also preparing to implement new international standards, such as SNA 2025 and BPM7.
