Balkan winter energy preparedness

Overview

Balkan nations are assessing energy infrastructure and supply readiness for the upcoming winter season.

In Serbia, Elektromreža Srbije (EMS) reported that the transmission system is prepared following the completion of power line repairs that were previously delayed by summer heat and high network loads. Electricity consumption has decreased by approximately 17 to 18 percent compared to summer peaks. Regional energy dynamics show that while low water levels have affected hydroelectric production, Hungary has increased nuclear output, whereas Romania’s Cernavodă plant is currently not producing electricity.

In Bulgaria, the Energy Minister confirmed that Bulgargaz has secured sufficient natural gas supplies, with gas continuing to be pumped into the Chiren underground storage facility. However, concerns remain regarding the Toplofikacia-Sofia heating network, where some repairs are unfinished due to the company’s financial obligations to Bulgargaz and the Bulgarian Energy Holding.
