Balkans public safety concerns
Overview
In early July 2026, Kosovo police announced new awareness campaigns targeting road safety and domestic‑violence prevention, signaling a proactive effort to address community safety issues.
A month later, police in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Kalesija area and Croatia’s Zadar County reported a noticeable uptick in petty crimes, public‑order incidents, and traffic accidents. Authorities documented multiple thefts, property damage, and several traffic collisions, while also warning residents about water‑supply strain and urging conservation.
By early August, public safety concerns in the region expanded to include structural failures and maritime emergencies. In Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a portion of the historic Alajbegović House collapsed, causing significant damage to parked vehicles; the building had reportedly been deteriorating since 2016.
Recent reports from Croatia have further diversified these safety concerns. In Crikvenica, an Aleppo pine fell on a crowd at Balustrada beach, injuring several Croatian and Czech nationals, including children. Maintenance officials suggested the fall may have been caused by shallow roots, soil conditions, or drought, and have announced additional inspections of trees in high-traffic areas. Maritime incidents continue to be a factor, with a speedboat striking the coast of Krk island and injuring two citizens, alongside several rescues of individuals on kayaks and SUP boards due to strong winds (Bura).
In Rijeka, a concrete balcony from an abandoned villa collapsed in the Pećina area, injuring two teenagers; firefighters were required to use specialized hydraulic tools to rescue the minors from the debris. Law enforcement activity has also escalated, with a 20-year-old Belgian national detained in Lekenik, Croatia, on suspicion of human smuggling involving individuals who had illegally crossed the border.
