Baloch nationalist independence movement
Overview
Baloch nationalist leaders have intensified calls for international recognition of Balochistan’s independence and the rejection of Pakistani rule.
On August 11, leader Mir Yar Baloch urged the international community to provide legal, political, and diplomatic recognition to the region. He accused the Pakistani establishment of ongoing repression, claiming over 50,000 Baloch people are being subjected to atrocities in torture cells. The movement highlighted the historical significance of August 11, which commemorates the 1947 assertion of independence by the Khanate of Kalat.
By August 14, movement leaders called for the observation of ‘Black Day’ to protest Pakistan’s Independence Day. Dil Murad Baloch, Secretary General of the Baloch National Movement, suggested that political borders are not permanent, referencing the 1971 breakup of Pakistan. Mir Yar Baloch further called on the global Baloch population to wear black armbands and hoist black flags. He also condemned recent Pakistani military airstrikes in the Surab region, alleging they caused civilian casualties.
