Baltic regional drone and hybrid security coordination

Regional security discussions in the Baltic area have intensified following drone incursions and concerns over potential Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. Initially, leaders from Lithuania and Estonia met in Tallinn to address aerial threats, specifically involving drones entering their territories, and to coordinate responses regarding defense industry cooperation and infrastructure protection.

This security focus has expanded into a broader regional effort. Baltic Sea nations are now working to establish a joint task force for drone defense to counter hybrid threats and facilitate information exchange following suspected sabotage of undersea cables and gas pipelines.

In a letter to the European Commission, officials from the Baltic, Polish, and Finnish regions warned of a “deteriorating security environment,” citing increased Russian airspace violations. Consequently, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are increasing defense investments and expanding military fortifications to prepare for potential hybrid warfare and intelligence suggesting tests of NATO resolve.
