Banco Master investigation and judicial secrecy controversy

The investigation into Banco Master and its associates has triggered political tension in Brazil, centered on the secrecy of judicial proceedings. Initially, São Paulo gubernatorial candidate Fernando Haddad called for the Supreme Federal Court to lift secrecy on all investigations related to the case. This demand followed the unsealing of messages between imprisoned former banker Daniel Vorcaro and Minister Alexandre de Moraes, which reportedly involved discussions regarding a contract between a firm owned by the minister’s wife and Banco Master. Haddad described the situation as a “mafia” and argued that full transparency is necessary for institutional accountability.

Following calls for transparency from President Lula and a partial lifting of secrecy by Justice Edson Fachin, leaders in the Brazilian Congress expressed concern over potential widespread leaks. Legislators fear being caught in disputes between Supreme Federal Court ministers, with some describing the unsealing of documents as a “Pandora’s box” that could influence upcoming state elections.

Additional tensions have emerged regarding the Federal Police investigation into Senator Ciro Nogueira’s relationship with Vorcaro. Furthermore, Senator Damares Alves has alleged that the Supreme Federal Court interfered with Senate investigations by restricting access to documents related to the bank and its associates.
