Bangladesh presidential election and transition

Following the resignation of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin due to health issues, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominated its Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, for the presidential election. Alamgir, a veteran politician, resigned from his party leadership roles and standing committee membership to enter the race.

After assuming office, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir pledged to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities in a ‘completely non-partisan manner.’ During his first durbar at Bangabhaban, he addressed officials and employees, reiterating that he resigned from all political positions—including his party, parliament, and cabinet memberships—prior to his presidency to ensure neutrality.

The President stated his sole objective is the welfare of the country and its people, asserting he will have no personal bias or affection toward any individual. He urged Bangabhaban staff to maintain professionalism, integrity, and strict confidentiality regarding state decisions to safeguard national security. Furthermore, he called for the responsible and transparent use of public funds to prevent waste and ensure accountability, while also paying respect to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.
