Basque cultural celebrations in Villa María
Overview
Villa María, Argentina, hosted the 2026 Basque National Week from October 5 to 11, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the local Centro Vasco Euzko Etxea.
The event featured cultural and artistic delegations from Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Peru. Activities included traditional Basque sports, music, dance, and gastronomy. During the celebrations, approximately 800 participants and representatives from 40 different Basque centers across the country attended.
A high-level delegation from the Basque Government, led by First Vice-Lehendakari and Counselor for Culture and Linguistic Policy Ibone Bengoetxea Otaolea, participated in the festivities. The delegation met with Mayor Eduardo Accastello and Córdoba Governor Martín Llaryora to discuss strengthening cultural, social, and productive ties, specifically focusing on cooperation in innovation, economic development, and the social economy.
The week concluded with a large-scale luncheon at the Sociedad Rural grounds, attended by more than 1,000 participants. During the closing ceremony, Mayor Accastello, alongside provincial legislators Verónica Navarro Alegre and Alfredo Nigro, presented an institutional plaque to honor the Euzko Etxea center for its eight decades of history. The event served to reinforce cultural traditions, identity, and the historical ties between the Basque Country and Argentina.
