Battle of Deligrad historical commemoration

Overview

The Battle of Deligrad, fought on September 3, 1806, was a decisive victory for Serbian insurgents led by Karađorđe against Ottoman forces. To block an Ottoman offensive from the south, Serbian leadership constructed a fortification at the entrance to the Juni gorge featuring nine trenches and four bastions. This stronghold, aided by the expertise of former Austrian captain Vuča Žikić, remained an unconquerable position until the suppression of the First Serbian Uprising in 1813.

Two hundred and twenty years after the battle, a state ceremony was held in Deligrad near Aleksinac to commemorate the event. Representing the President of Serbia, Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski addressed the gathering, noting that while past generations fought for the existence of the nation, the current generation must ensure its endurance. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking state officials, the Serbian Orthodox Church, and representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces.
