Bayerischer Rundfunk radio portfolio consolidation

Overview

Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) has announced that its digital radio station, BR Schlager, will cease broadcasting on DAB+ and its independent internet livestream on November 9, 2026, at 6:00 PM. This decision follows an earlier timeline where the program was expected to conclude at the end of the year, but the shutdown has been moved forward.

The reduction is part of a broader consolidation within the ARD network necessitated by the Reformstaatsvertrag, which requires public broadcasters to significantly decrease their radio portfolios. As a result, BR is reducing its linear radio offerings from ten stations to six. While the standalone linear program is ending, content will be integrated into the ARD Sounds digital platform under the ‘ARD Schlagerwelt’ section.

This phase-out is part of a wider ARD trend to discontinue dedicated Schlager stations. NDR Schlager is scheduled to end its program on December 31, 2026, while MDR Schlagerwelt will remain available through the end of 2026 before transitioning away from traditional antenna broadcasting on January 1, 2027. The MDR is currently leading the development of a new joint Schlager livestream titled ‘ARD Schlagerwelt,’ though its official launch remains subject to approval from the MDR Broadcasting Council.
