Bear encounters in Bulgaria
Overview
In September, two bears attacked a tourist tent in the Dragunata area near Lokorsko, Sofia. While the tourists escaped without serious injury, local authorities issued warnings to hikers and residents regarding the risks of camping in the southern slopes of the Stara Planina mountain range.
By mid-October, human-wildlife conflict intensified in the Devin region. In the village of Goyvren, bears had been frequently appearing near homes and attacking poultry, including an incident where 21 chickens were destroyed. Following these sightings, officials captured one bear and transported it to the Kormisosh State Forestry.
In response to the ongoing presence of young bears in residential areas, local and national officials, including the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, met to coordinate management efforts. Authorities have deployed additional traps and utilized camera monitoring to manage the situation.
