Beaver reintroduction for drought resiliency in US
Overview
Efforts to utilize beavers as ecosystem engineers to combat drought and restore riparian habitats are expanding across the Western United States.
In Colorado, beavers at a regenerative agriculture site near Aspen have significantly increased the water table and stimulated riparian growth. Despite extreme heat and low snowpack in Pitkin County, the water storage systems created by the animals provided two additional months of water beyond expectations. Consequently, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has begun releasing beavers into state wildlife areas near Rifle to restore ecosystems.
Similarly, in Utah, researchers from Utah State University have been working on a reintroduction project on the Price River since 2019. This initiative aims to use beaver dams to slow runoff, create wetlands for fish and amphibians, improve water quality, and reduce the risk of large-scale wildfires by helping the soil retain nutrients.
