Benelux crackdown on illegal e‑bikes

Overview

In Tilburg, Netherlands, a theft involving a fatbike turned violent when a man was stabbed while attempting to prevent the crime.

In late August 2026, the response in Sint-Truiden escalated. Following the seizure of seven fatbikes in the local area this year, Mayor Ludwig Vandenhove called for stricter regulations or a total ban on fatbike sales. Vandenhove argued that while the commercial sector profits from sales, the “societal costs of unsafe use fall upon the community and taxpayers.” He has also requested that local schools prohibit the parking of these bikes on school property to prioritize traffic safety.
