Bengal tiger presence in La Barca, Jalisco

Overview

Authorities in La Barca, Jalisco, initially issued a preventive alert following reports of a large feline, possibly a tiger, in rural areas connecting San José de las Moras and La Providencia. Civil Protection and Firefighters conducted search operations to verify the species while advising residents to avoid certain paths.

Following more than 37 hours of roaming, a female Bengal tiger weighing approximately 100 kilograms was captured. The animal, estimated to be one and a half years old, had been filmed attacking livestock such as sheep and cattle.

Authorities used drones with thermal cameras and specialized traps to secure the tiger, which appeared to be in good condition. The animal was transferred to the Wildlife Rescue Unit of Tlajomulco for medical observation, and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has launched an investigation to determine the animal’s origin.
