Overview

Bengaluru has faced significant urban infrastructure challenges, characterized by a persistent pothole crisis and frequent disruptions to the Namma Metro network. Between September 2025 and July 2026, the metro recorded 15 technical disruptions involving signaling, power, and rolling-stock systems across the Green, Purple, and Yellow lines.

In response to these issues and safety risks on damaged roads, the Karnataka government announced a major road improvement initiative. The project aims to cover approximately 2,500 km of roads with an estimated cost of ₹8,000 crore through programs such as the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Programme (CMIDP).

Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has directed officials to prioritize the repair of potholes on arterial and sub-arterial roads before moving to ward roads. To ensure accountability, the government plans to implement monthly review meetings and an auditing system to monitor civic works and infrastructure development.
