Berlin ZLB library relocation project
Overview
The Berlin Senate and property owner Commerz Real have signed a letter of intent to relocate the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek (ZLB) to the Galeria department store building at Alexanderplatz. The project aims to consolidate the library’s currently split sites into a single location of approximately 43,000 square meters, with 28,000 square meters dedicated to public space and the remainder for retail and gastronomy.
Commerz Real has committed to modernizing the building by 2030. The initiative is designed to revitalize Alexanderplatz by transforming the area into a cultural and commercial hub rather than a mere transit point. Negotiations regarding financing models and specific terms are expected to continue through October.
