Bersatu party leadership resignations in Malaysia

In early August 2026, senior figures in Malaysia's Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia announced a wave of resignations. On 5 August, PBB information chief Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he would give up his Asajaya state‑assembly seat if the party did not nominate him for the upcoming Sarawak state election, emphasizing party interests over personal ambition. In the same statement, Bersatu assemblyman Datuk Razali Idris of Terengganu submitted his resignation as state chairman and announced he would vacate his Marang division chief post in September, while remaining a party member. Additional Bersatu officials in Terengganu – Zawawi Ismail, Husaimi Hussin and deputy chairman Khazan Che Mat – also stepped down from their respective party roles.

Two days later, on 7 August, the resignations were detailed further, highlighting a near‑paralysis of Bersatu's Terengganu leadership. The three senior leaders who resigned were state chief Razali Idris, who also served on the state executive council and chaired the tourism, culture, environment and climate committee, and two state assembly members, Datuk Mohd Zawawi Ismail (Telemong) and Mohd Husaimi Hussin (Hulu Besut), who gave up the party's information chief and treasurer posts respectively. Razali’s resignation letter had been sent to party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in mid‑July, and Deputy state leader Khazan Che Mat signaled he might follow suit. The resignations came amid earlier dismissals and defections that have weakened Bersatu's state structure.
