Bhopal illegal commercial unit crackdown

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a city-wide crackdown on illegal commercial units operating within residential areas, following directives from the Supreme Court.

In early August, the BMC issued over 1,000 notices, with significant activity reported in the Arera Colony and Bawadiya Kalan neighborhoods. City officials stated that surveys are being conducted to verify land-use permissions, and police assistance has been deployed to support the anti-encroachment squads. Officials noted that while traders who voluntarily halted operations would not face sealing, those reopening after inspections would be targeted.

By late August, the operation expanded to areas such as Bairagarh and Sant Hirdaram Nagar, where notices were issued to several establishments including hotels, cafes, and gyms. The enforcement has met with opposition from local residents and business owners. Organized under the Bhopal Chamber of Commerce, traders have argued that the sudden notices disrupt livelihoods and do not allow sufficient time to present documentation.

By late August, tensions escalated as traders staged intense protests against the BMC’s sealing actions. Protesters utilized road blockades at major intersections, such as Roshanpura and Mandakini Chauraha, and conducted symbolic funeral processions for their businesses. Business owners have characterized the enforcement as a “livelihood crisis” for small and medium enterprises. Beyond calling for a master plan to regularize existing activities, some groups have demanded relief regarding bank loans and EMIs, warning of political consequences in upcoming elections.
