Biodiversity and land restoration initiatives in Italy

Overview

Environmental conservation efforts in Italy have expanded through regional and national initiatives focused on ecosystem resilience and resource management.

In the Veneto region, the IN. E. R. BIO project is working to restore degraded lands, such as landslides, former quarries, and industrial sites, by using native plant species. In collaboration with the University of Padua, the project utilizes a registry of high-biodiversity semi-natural meadows to source resilient vegetation suitable for local pollinators. Practical applications have already commenced in the Fantoni landslide area and on the Asiago Plateau.

On a broader scale, Italy has launched initiatives under the 2023/2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan to protect local genetic resources at risk of extinction. This program provides funding for herbaceous species, woody fruit species, and indigenous animal resources, supporting farmers, researchers, and germplasm banks.

Additionally, the municipality of Supino has introduced a ten-year Forest Management and Settlement Plan. This strategic framework aims to balance environmental protection with sustainable resource management, focusing on forest maintenance, fire prevention, and the reduction of hydrogeological risks.
