Blockchain.com U.S. expansion and IPO efforts
Overview
Blockchain.com is pursuing a multi-faceted expansion in the United States, centered on a planned initial public offering (IPO) and regulatory licensing.
The company is reportedly preparing for a U.S. IPO to raise approximately $500 million, seeking a valuation between $4 billion and $6 billion. This represents a decrease from its 2022 peak valuation of $14 billion. To support its growth, the company has explored integrating tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs through an agreement with the New York Stock Exchange.
To facilitate its service offerings, the Dallas-based firm has applied for two specific registrations from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC): a Designated Contract Market (DCM) license and a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) license through the National Futures Association.
If approved, the DCM license would allow the company to operate its own prediction market, as the CFTC classifies event contracts as swaps. The FCM license would enable the firm to process derivatives trades and hold customer funds. CEO Peter Smith stated that these filings aim to create a unified platform where customers can manage digital assets and trade derivatives or take positions on real-world events within a single application.
While Blockchain.com currently provides prediction markets and perpetual futures to international users through third-party partnerships—including a 2026 collaboration with Polymarket and an arrangement with Hyperliquid—these licenses would allow the company to offer regulated versions of these products directly to American retail and institutional customers.
