Blue Carrier 2 cargo ship fire

Overview

A major fire broke out on the Greek-flagged Ro-Ro cargo ship Blue Carrier 2 on the morning of September 25, 2026. The vessel was sailing north of Mykonos, traveling from Piraeus to Samos, Kos, and Rhodes, when the blaze began at approximately 08:57.

Attica Group reported that the fire likely originated in one of the ship’s garages, specifically possibly starting from a parked truck in garage number 4 on the vessel's upper deck. The fire spread rapidly, leading the vessel to issue a distress signal. A large-scale emergency response was initiated, involving the Hellenic Coast Guard, fire service vessels from Syros, Mykonos, Lavrio, and Piraeus, as well as tugboats and helicopters. Aerial surveillance was also provided by fire service helicopters and specialized monitoring aircraft. The rescue tug Aigaion Pelagos arrived at the scene to assist with water spraying and controlled cooling of the ship's hull to manage high temperatures.

All 29 people on board, including 28 crew members and one truck driver, were successfully evacuated via lifeboats and rescue vessels. They were transported to Tinos and Athens and are reported to be in good health. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 166 trucks and 29 passenger cars.

Attica Group has engaged specialized companies to manage the vessel and implement measures to protect the marine environment from potential pollution. Authorities are also working to ensure the vessel remains at a safe distance from the coastline to avoid grounding. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has held emergency meetings to manage the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire.
