BNB Chain NewL1 Layer 1 development

Overview

BNB Chain has initiated the development of a new high-performance, EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain, provisionally named ‘NewL1’. The project began with the launch of a community design forum to discuss technical specifications, including consensus, storage, and post-quantum security.

Technical goals for the network include processing over 100,000 transactions per second, achieving transaction pre-confirmations in approximately 20 to 50 milliseconds, and reaching block finality in under one second. The architecture is intended to support high-frequency trading, real-time payments, and artificial intelligence applications. To facilitate connectivity, a native cross-chain bridge is being developed to link NewL1 with the existing BNB Smart Chain (BSC).

Notably, the project will not issue a new native token. Instead, BNB will serve as the sole gas token for transaction fees, staking, and governance across both ecosystems. Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao supported this approach, stating, ‘Multiple chains, one coins.’

The project is currently in the design phase and running on an internal multi-validator development network. A public testnet is projected for late 2026, with a mainnet deployment targeted for early 2027.
