Bogotá water resource management and reuse

Overview

The Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá (EAAB) has initiated efforts to secure water resources for the city in anticipation of the El Niño phenomenon. This process began with a request to the Ministry of Environment for permits to reuse treated wastewater from the Salitre plant for industrial, construction, and irrigation purposes.

Following this request, the Autoridad Nacional de Licencias Ambientales (ANLA) authorized the EAAB to reuse up to 77 liters per second of treated wastewater from the PTAR Salitre plant for an eight-year period. The authorized uses include the manufacturing of concrete and asphalt, street and facade cleaning, garden irrigation, and cooling systems for data centers. The EAAB is now tasked with implementing the infrastructure required to begin supply.

Concurrently, the EAAB has announced scheduled water service interruptions in localities such as Suba, Usaquén, Usme, and Bosa to perform maintenance and repairs on distribution networks.
