Bolivia Amazon and biodiversity conservation initiatives

The Bolivian government has launched a series of strategic initiatives to protect the Amazon and manage national biodiversity. Initially, the Ministry of Sustainable Production, Environment, and Water introduced the ‘Amazonia Bolivia Strategy’. This portfolio of 47 projects seeks international investment from entities such as the World Bank and the European Union to support forest conservation, infrastructure, and sustainable bioeconomies, including chestnut and asaí production. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the World Wildlife Fund to create long-term financing for 28 protected areas.

Following these proposals, the government approved the National Strategy for Biodiversity Conservation and its Action Plan for 2026–2030 via Supreme Decree No. 5753. This formal strategy outlines 17 national goals and 271 specific actions centered on four pillars: regulatory and financing frameworks, ecosystem management, biodiversity use, and knowledge management. The plan emphasizes linking conservation with community livelihoods through the sustainable use of forest products like rubber and vicuña fiber.
