Bolivian political and economic crisis
Overview
Bolivia is experiencing a period of political and economic instability under the administration of President Rodrigo Paz. In mid-August, opposition leaders Manfred Reyes Villa, Jorge Tuto Quiroga, and Samuel Doria Medina convened in Cochabamba to establish a unified stance regarding the national crisis and their role within the Legislative Assembly. Reyes Villa indicated that any support for government initiatives would be based on national interest rather than political concessions.
By late August, the crisis expanded to include social mobilization. Organizations aligned with former President Evo Morales declared a state of permanent mobilization and scheduled a massive march in Cochabamba for September 4, 2026. These groups have criticized the administration’s economic policies as “neoliberal, impoverishing, and privatizing,” specifically targeting the elimination of the Ministry of Planning and the implementation of Supreme Decree 5676, which adjusts diesel prices. Protesters have also called for travel bans against President Paz, his family, and his cabinet.
