Bologna 46th anniversary of 1980 bombing

Entities: Paolo Lambertini · Michele de Pascale · Matteo Lepore · Emilia‑Romagna · Nicola Molteni

Overview

In late July 2026 Italy staged a series of events to mark the 46th anniversary of the 1980 Bologna railway‑station bombing, the deadliest post‑war terrorist attack in the country that killed 85 people and wounded more than 200. A national cycling relay, “Insieme per non dimenticare il 2 agosto 1980”, began on 27 July at the Brenner Pass and arrived in Bologna on 2 August for the final ceremony.

Municipal and regional officials—including mayor Matteo Lepore, Emilia‑Romagna President Michele de Pascale, interior under‑secretary Nicola Molteni and President Sergio Mattarella—joined association leader Paolo Lambertini for a minute of silence observed at the exact time of the 10:25 a.m. explosion. A three‑tone train whistle tribute and the placement of 85 white gerberas on the façade of the Arena del Sole were followed by a public march from Piazza Nettuno along Via Indipendenza to the station. President Mattarella said the tragedy “left a deep mark on the conscience of the Republic”, reaffirming the neofascist motive and calling for the full truth to be disclosed.

Cultural initiatives accompanied the program. In Como, the Fondazione Cardinal Ferrari presented a 25‑minute performance “Il destino è l’ora – Tremenda tessitura”. On 1 August the Emilia‑Romagna Teatro installed the gerberas, remaining in place until the afternoon of 2 August.

The ceremony also recalled the two Brusciano victims, Salvatore Lauro and Velia Carli, and honored railway worker Silver Sirotti and the taxi drivers who died. Judicial reviews continued to affirm the involvement of neofascist NAR members Valerio Fioravanti, Francesca Mambro and Paolo Bellini, while families press for full disclosure of the masterminds behind the attack.
