Bomb‑threat emails in India

Overview

In July 2026, Indian authorities responded to a series of bomb‑threat emails that triggered security lockdowns at multiple government facilities. The first incident, reported on 20 July in Patna, Bihar, involved threats to the chief minister’s residence, the state secretariat, several schools and a passport office. Police placed the sites on high alert, evacuated the affected locations and conducted thorough searches with bomb‑disposal units and dogs, but found no explosives. The emails referenced pro‑Khalistan slogans and named a former high commissioner, though the sender remained unidentified.

A second wave of threats emerged on 31 July, this time targeting the District Bar Association of Gurugram and the District and Sessions Court, as well as the Mini Secretariat and nearby schools. The threats prompted an immediate evacuation of lawyers, court staff and the public, and all hearings were suspended for the day. Security forces again carried out extensive searches, finding no suspicious objects. Both incidents are being treated as hoaxes while investigators work to trace the source of the emails.

The pattern suggests a coordinated campaign of email‑based bomb threats against Indian public institutions, prompting heightened security measures and ongoing investigations.
