Bong Joon-ho film 4K restorations and re-releases

Overview

Director Bong Joon-ho’s films are receiving high-definition restorations and new releases. Magnolia Pictures announced a nationwide theatrical re-release of the 2006 sci-fi thriller ‘The Host’ in a new 4K restoration, scheduled for November 20, 2026, to celebrate its 20th anniversary. This release will feature an exclusive conversation with the director and filmmaker Edgar Wright. Following the theatrical run, a digital release is scheduled for November 30, 2026. The original film, which follows a family attempting to rescue a daughter from a mutant creature in Seoul’s Han River, was a major success in South Korea, selling over thirteen million tickets during its initial run.

Furthering these high-definition efforts, Criterion is launching a 4-disc 4K UHD/Blu-ray special edition of ‘Parasite’. This set includes both color and black-and-white versions approved by Bong Joon-ho and cinematographer Hong Kyung Pyo, along with Dolby Atmos soundtracks and various bonus materials, such as audio commentaries, interviews, and a masterclass from the Lumière Festival.
