Borno State insurgency reconstruction efforts
Overview
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has initiated efforts to reconstruct infrastructure and restore services following years of insurgency. In Mallam-Fatori, the governor pledged to rebuild schools, hospitals, and housing to support returning residents, while also suspending local village and ward heads for their absence during inspections.
Expanding on the scale of the damage, the governor reported that more than 5,000 school structures have been destroyed by the decade-long conflict. This destruction contributed to a period where an estimated 2.2 million children were out of school, with fewer than 500,000 enrolled. Zulum also noted that many teachers and administrators lost their lives while performing their duties. To address these challenges, the administration has committed over N46 billion toward basic and secondary education for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years.
In Maiduguri, the governor has begun commissioning significant new developments. These include a N15.9 billion nine-span flyover in the Post Office area, completed in 11 months by Eighteenth Engineering Company, and a N5 billion project consisting of a 2.5 km dualized road and a 5 km drainage network. Additionally, the administration has inaugurated new educational facilities, specifically Larawaram Community Senior Secondary School and Shehu Sanda Kyarimi 1 Primary and Junior Day Secondary School, as part of an effort to restore community confidence and provide educational opportunities.
