Borno State insurgency recovery and political developments

Overview

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has focused on reconstruction and social support as the region recovers from long-term insurgency. Following reports that over a decade of conflict destroyed more than 5,000 school structures and left millions of children out of school, the state government invested over N46 billion in basic and secondary education for the 2025-2026 fiscal years.

To further support recovery, Governor Zulum launched a N1.05 billion empowerment programme targeting vulnerable populations in Maiduguri and Jere, including youth, persons with disabilities, and those affected by leprosy.

Amidst these recovery efforts, political tensions have emerged regarding the 2027 elections. While Northern leaders have signaled support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, Zulum has denied allegations of ordering politically motivated arrests of individuals wearing ‘Tinubu Must Go’ T-shirts, attributing such claims to ‘desperate politicians’.
