Borussia Dortmund Japan preseason tour 2026

Entities: Borussia Dortmund · FC Tokyo · Yamamoto Tensho · Niko Kovac · Tokyo

Overview

In late July 2026 Borussia Dortmund announced its Japan preseason tour squad, including 18‑year‑old Japanese midfielder Yamamoto Tensho on loan from Gamba Osaka. The itinerary featured a friendly against Cerezo Osaka on 29 July and a match versus FC Tokyo on 1 August, the club’s first visit to Japan since 2022, aimed at expanding its Asian profile.

The tour proceeded as planned. On 30 July the team took part in a “BVB Street Soccer Series” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Plaza, with eleven first‑team players, including Tensho, engaging in a youth tournament and fan activities. The following day Dortmund travelled to the Japan National Stadium for the scheduled friendly against FC Tokyo. Coach Niko Kovac rotated the squad, resting or omitting regulars such as Julian Ryerson, Gregor Kobel, Marcel Sabitzer, Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can.

The match, streamed on Sky, DAZN and BVB‑TV, was delayed by 20 minutes after heavy rain in the 33rd minute. After play resumed, Fabio Silva scored in the 54th minute, giving Dortmund a 1‑0 victory that they held to the final whistle. The game suffered a second interruption when fireworks from a nearby baseball stadium added noise. Mid‑fielder Carney Chukwuemeka suffered a knee injury early – after eight minutes – and was withdrawn, prompting concerns about his fitness. Coach Kovač praised the performance but said his recovery must be monitored. Dortmund will next face Arsenal in London before a final pre‑season fixture against AS Roma and the German Supercup against Bayern Munich on 22 August.
