Boston Dynamics IPO delay and Hyundai integration
Overview
Boston Dynamics, a robotics firm owned by Hyundai Motor Group, is unlikely to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in 2027. Senior management and executives have indicated that a stock market debut may be delayed until 2029 or 2030. This delay is attributed to the flagship Atlas humanoid robot lacking widespread commercial deployment and scalability, as well as the company’s ongoing unprofitability.
Financial disclosures show that Boston Dynamics reported a loss of 528.4 billion won in 2025, contributing to cumulative losses of approximately 1.7 trillion won between 2021 and 2025.
Despite the delayed IPO, Hyundai maintains long-term ambitions for the sector. The group plans to build a manufacturing plant by 2028 with a capacity of 30,000 robots annually and intends to integrate humanoid robots into its manufacturing facilities, beginning with its site in Georgia. Additionally, Hyundai has announced plans to acquire SoftBank’s approximately 10% stake to make Boston Dynamics a wholly owned subsidiary.
