Botafogo squad and coaching restructuring

Overview

Following elimination from the Copa Sudamericana and the dismissal of coach Franclim Carvalho, Botafogo has initiated a squad restructuring to reduce its wage bill.

Negotiations for the permanent transfer of Uruguayan forward Santi Rodríguez to MLS side Columbus Crew have encountered significant obstacles. While Rodríguez reportedly agreed to personal terms, the deal is currently stalled due to outstanding debts owed by Botafogo to Major League Soccer. The league prohibits transfers to clubs with such arrears, which include debts related to previous signings.

Earlier reports indicated the sale of forward Matheus Martins to Dynamo Moscow for approximately R$ 42 million; however, recent developments show Martins is returning to Botafogo after failing medical examinations with the Russian club. Botafogo has expressed disagreement with the medical diagnosis and is considering legal measures regarding the player’s image rights. Additionally, Ecuadorian player Gonzalo Plata also failed medicals with the Russian side and is returning to Flamengo.

The club is also evaluating its coaching situation. While a new head coach is being sought, U-20 coach Rodrigo Bellão may remain in his position or be officially appointed until the end of the year, pending discussions with new SAF investor Gabriel de Alba and the team’s performance in upcoming matches against Athletico-PR, Flamengo, and Palmeiras.
