Botswana economic and financial development

Overview

Botswana is pursuing economic transformation through digital infrastructure expansion and capital market growth. Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) has expanded its national fibre network to over 14,000 kilometres, connecting 227 towns and villages to support digital inclusion and ICT education while maintaining financial sustainability without government subvention.

Simultaneously, the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) is implementing its ‘10X by 2030’ strategy to expand the nation’s capital markets tenfold and establish Gaborone as a premier African financial gateway. This initiative includes repatriating pension capital and financing 186 national projects. To facilitate this, the BSE is focusing on product innovation such as Exchange-Traded Funds and Eurobonds. Additionally, Access Bank Botswana is facilitating regional investment by offering local investors stakes in a US$1.6 billion Dangote refinery share sale.
