Brazil agricultural commodity price volatility
Overview
In late July 2026, Brazil saw a sharp decline in prices for two major agricultural commodities. On July 23, coffee prices fell sharply as unusually dry weather in Brazil’s coffee-growing regions accelerated the harvest, prompting a drop in both domestic arabica and robusta rates and pulling New York coffee futures lower. Four days later, on July 27, prices for the staple feijão-carioca (pinto bean) also fell sharply after an expanded harvest in the Cerrado region increased market supply. The bean price slide was driven by sellers accelerating sales to meet liquidity needs while buyers stayed cautious, awaiting further deliveries.
By late August, coffee markets continued to experience volatility. In São Paulo, Arabica and Robusta prices saw further declines, with Arabica falling 0.59% to R$1,804.65 per 60 kg bag and Robusta dropping 1.16% to R$1,062.69. On the New York Stock Exchange, Arabica futures lost over 1% as traders engaged in profit-taking.
Market movements are currently being influenced by the progress of the coffee harvest in the Cooxupé region, which has reached 81.1% completion due to favorable weather, though rainfall remains a potential risk to grain quality. Other contributing factors include low ICE stocks, which are at their lowest levels in nearly three years, and the partial resumption of coffee exports from Colombia via the port of Buenaventura following a recent earthquake.
