Brazil expands EV charging infrastructure
Overview
In mid‑July 2026, Grupo FRP’s Esquina do Futuro network announced a 2 million‑real investment to install 15 multiservice electric‑vehicle charging stations in Santa Catarina. The first five sites opened in Florianópolis, Palhoça and São José, with the remaining ten scheduled for August‑September, extending coverage to Itapema.
By early August, the state utility Celesc began adding fast and semi‑fast chargers across municipalities such as Criciúma, Tubarão, Jaguaruna, Lauro Müller, Garopaba and Imbituba, spacing stations roughly every 50 km to support tourism and local commerce and planning further installations in Criciúma and Praia Grande. At the same time, Porto Alegre’s municipal Innovation Office expanded its public‑street charging pilot from three to seven locations, reporting about 1,250 recharges by 546 users and no cost to the city.
Together, these developments show a rapid expansion of EV charging infrastructure in southern Brazil, moving from a private‑sector rollout to broader utility‑ and city‑led deployments, increasing station density and extending service to new municipalities and urban streets.
