Brazil fertilizer market amid Middle East tensions
Entities: Brazil · Urea · Coffee · Egypt · Yara International
Overview
Mid‑June 2026, a brief buying window opened after the Hormuz cease‑fire, with urea prices falling and importers rebuilding stocks. By early July, fertilizer imports rose 9 % in value despite a 6 % volume dip, while domestic production fell and higher sulfur prices squeezed margins. The first half of the year recorded an 8.6 % drop in total fertilizer imports year‑on‑year, with sharp falls in urea, MAP and ammonium nitrate volumes.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz in mid‑July intensified the squeeze. By 14 July, Brazil’s phosphate‑fertiliser imports were down 24 % YoY, sulfur imports fell 42 % and sulfur prices surged 127 % above $1,000 /tonne, forcing lower utilisation rates. Global urea prices rose 24 % and Yara warned of tight nitrogen supplies.
In late July, international urea prices jumped more than 18 % in a month, reaching $421.50 /tonne on 17 July, as Brazilian buyers stocked up for the 2026/27 crop amid renewed U.S.–Iran tensions and reduced Hormuz traffic. Phosphate prices also climbed due to China’s export suspension and Russia’s nitrogen limits, while tightening credit conditions threatened producer profitability.
By 25 July, Brazil’s CFR urea price had risen to $455‑$468 /tonne, $60‑$68 above late‑June levels, reflecting continued supply disruptions, higher European gas costs and U.S. sanctions on Iran. Yara reported a 39 % YoY drop in urea deliveries in Q2, raising replacement costs for buyers. The same Middle‑East turbulence pushed coffee prices up 14.75 % to 319.20 cents per pound, underscoring broader commodity impacts.
