Brazil healthcare infrastructure and AI integration

Overview

Brazil is advancing its healthcare capabilities through investments in specialized infrastructure, advanced therapies, and digital technology.

In Ceará, a partnership between the Ministry of Health, Fiocruz, and local institutions aims to expand access to advanced therapies within the Unified Health System (SUS). This includes establishing a production center for CAR-T cell therapies using a Point-of-Care model to reduce costs and accelerate treatment for hematological diseases. Concurrently, federal investments via the Novo PAC Saúde program are funding new primary and specialized facilities, such as a Normal Birth Center and a Basic Health Unit in Horizonte.

Technological integration is expanding through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for chronic disease management, precision medicine, and clinical assistance. New continuous glucose monitoring systems utilize AI algorithms to predict glycemic trends, while the biotechnology sector uses bioinformatics to integrate genetic and metabolic data for personalized diagnostics.

Recent implementations of AI include an AI-driven triage system in Balneário Camboriú, designed to assist telemedicine services by directing patients toward teleconsultations, nursing support, or in-person visits. Health Secretary Aline Leal noted that the technology serves as a “complementary tool rather than a replacement for medical professionals.”

Clinical innovations such as the ExtensIA project, a collaboration between WorkAI and Fundação Unimed, use AI to assist patients with neurovegetative diseases like ALS through digital avatars and assistive agents. Meanwhile, the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF1) is reviewing the legality of CFM Resolution No. 2.454/2026, which regulates AI in medical practice by requiring physician mediation for diagnoses and mandating that AI-assisted decisions be recorded in patient files.
