Brazilian births in Burgos hospital investigation

Hospital officials at the University Hospital of Burgos reported a recurring pattern of Brazilian women, who had received prenatal care in Belgium, arriving in Spain to give birth. From early May through July, the obstetrics department recorded roughly 30 deliveries involving women in their 38‑40 weeks of pregnancy, each using one of two local addresses and often accompanied by the same male companion. The hospital alerted the National Police, prompting an ongoing investigation into the phenomenon.

By late July, Spanish authorities expanded the probe, considering the possibility of an organized surrogacy or reproductive‑exploitation network. Police are examining whether the repeated births reflect coordinated gestational surrogacy, though no specific crime has been identified yet. Regional opposition parties have called for explanations from the Castilla‑y‑León government regarding how the cases occurred and what protections are in place for the mothers and newborns.
