Brazilian city cycling promotion events

In late July 2026 Brazilian municipalities continued to organise free public cycling activities. In Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, more than 2,000 participants rode a 16 km route as part of a mass pedal event that also featured entertainment and medical support. São Paulo announced a free‑registration ride through the Atlantic Forest, emphasizing active mobility and environmental education. A University of São Paulo study covering a decade of data noted that proximity to bike lanes increases cycling frequency, but overall bicycle use fell, suggesting infrastructure alone does not drive uptake.

A few days later, other cities marked National Cyclist Day with their own rides. Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, scheduled its first organized 10‑km loop to celebrate the opening of a newly paved avenue that includes upgraded lighting and drainage. In the Federal District, a Bicicletada on the Eixão commemorated the 20th anniversary of cyclist Pedro Davison’s death, calling for safer streets and greater respect for cyclists. These events show a broadening of Brazil’s cycling promotion efforts, linking community rides to new infrastructure projects and road‑safety campaigns.
