Overview

Recent judicial decisions in Brazil have addressed the transition of various convicts to semi-open prison regimes based on sentence reductions earned through educational and labor activities.

In one instance, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes granted Débora Rodrigues dos Santos, a convict involved in the January 8, 2023, attacks in Brasília, progression to a semi-open regime. Her sentence was reduced by 212 days due to work, reading, and passing the Enem PPL exam. His new regime includes a mandatory curfew, electronic monitoring, and prohibitions on alcohol and weapons.
