Brazilian municipal flood mitigation projects

In June 2026 the governor of Sergipe and the mayor of Riachuelo opened a suite of drainage works and road resurfacing aimed at ending chronic flooding in the town, installing macro‑ and micro‑drainage systems and renovating the main avenue.

In July 2026 the mayor of Niterói inaugurated a R$240‑million urban‑infrastructure programme for the Engenho do Mato and Maravista II neighbourhoods in the Região Oceânica. The Engenho do Mato phase, funded with R$167.7 million, upgraded over 100 streets, adding 39 km of drainage, 207,000 m² of interlocking pavement, 1,141 m² of asphalt, sidewalks, curbs and 34.3 km of roads. The Maravista II phase, financed with R$72.9 million, improved 24 streets with new drainage, asphalt paving, sidewalks and curbs. Executed by the municipal company ION, the works belong to a ten‑year program that has delivered more than 750 infrastructure improvements and aim to raise property values and quality of life for thousands of families.

Both initiatives reflect broader local‑government efforts to improve public safety, mobility and quality of life in flood‑prone Brazilian communities.
