Brazilian prison system security and reform efforts

Overview

Security operations and administrative reforms are being implemented across various Brazilian prison systems. In Paraíba, large-scale operations at the Silvio Porto Penitentiary resulted in the seizure of narcotics and mobile phones, while the Public Ministry launched an investigation into how inmates are separated by criminal faction affiliation.

Efforts to improve inmate welfare and reintegration have also emerged. In Paraíba, the Court of Accounts introduced the LiberTCE program to promote literacy, and the Court of Justice launched the ‘Voz que Liberta’ project at the Maria Júlia Maranhão Women's Penitentiary. This initiative provides healthcare, professional training, and legal support for incarcerated women.

In other regions, Rondônia has intensified inspections using canine units and technology, while Goiás has conducted institutional visits to evaluate security infrastructure and resocialization programs.
