Brazilian Senate veterinarian death after dog attack

Vitória Valle de Oliveira Pinha, a 36-year-old outsourced veterinarian, died following an attack by a Belgian Malinois at the Brazilian Senate Federal's kennel in Brasília.

The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, August 18, while Pinha was performing her duties as an animal handler for the Cinotecnia Service, specifically while feeding the animal. The dog bit her in the neck, causing severe arterial injury and exposing part of her spine. After receiving first aid from a legislative police officer and treatment by the Fire Department, Pinha was transported to the Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal. She underwent emergency surgery and remained in the Intensive Care Unit for four days before passing away on Saturday, August 22.

The investigation into the death has been taken over by the Federal Police. The Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of the Federal District (CRMV-DF) reported that the Senate kennel lacked mandatory registration and a designated technical veterinary supervisor. Officials noted that standard operating procedures in regulated facilities typically prohibit handlers from managing animals alone.

The Senate Federal has expressed deep regret, is investigating the circumstances, and is providing support to the victim's family. The dog involved has been removed from operational duties and will undergo medical observation; the institution confirmed the animal's vaccinations were up to date.
