Breast cancer awareness initiatives in Chubut

Overview

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, health initiatives in Chubut, Argentina, focused on education and early detection. An awareness talk at Biblioteca Sarmiento, led by oncology, nutrition, and psychology professionals, addressed the importance of early diagnosis and the need to combat misinformation. The event also noted that breast cancer can affect men, often resulting in delayed diagnoses due to social taboos.

To support prevention, the Chubut provincial government conducted over 1,800 mammographies across several hospitals, including facilities in Comodoro Rivadavia, Esquel, Puerto Madryn, Trelew, and Rawson. Authorities expanded service hours and removed the requirement for prior medical referrals for women aged 40 and older. Medical specialists participating in related seminars recommended combining mammography with ultrasound for more complete evaluations, noting that early detection can increase survival rates to 90 percent.
