Brians 2 prison staff security protests

Overview

On August 16, 2026, a visitor at the Brians 2 penitentiary center in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Barcelona, assaulted a staff member in the communications area. The attack reportedly began after the employee asked the visitor to wait for an elevator to accommodate elderly individuals. The assailant caused injuries to the staff member and an 86-year-old bystander who attempted to intervene. The Mossos d'Esquadra detained the aggressor.

Following the incident, approximately 200 prison officials held a protest at the facility on August 19 to demand improved security and protection against workplace violence. Union representatives, including the Marea Blava collective, characterized such assaults as a “daily reality” within Catalan prisons. Protesters are calling for structural reforms, such as increasing staff numbers, implementing partner-based work systems, and establishing permanent bans for violent visitors across national prison facilities.
