Brooklyn waterfront stabbing investigation

Overview

On October 30, 2026, 28-year-old Katie Suarez was attacked while jogging along the Shore Parkway Greenway in the Bath Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn. Suarez, a Brooklyn College graduate and bank teller who was training for the New York City Marathon, sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck. Her father discovered her injured on the path near Bay 17th Street, and she was transported to NYU Langone Hospital.

While initially listed in critical condition, Suarez was declared brain dead and taken off life support on Monday, November 2, three days after the attack.

The NYPD is investigating the assault as a potentially random and unprovoked attack. Investigators noted that her cellphone and jewelry were left untouched, suggesting the motive was not robbery. Police described a large crime scene featuring a blood trail spanning approximately 150 feet.

Law enforcement has deployed aviation, K-9, drone, and scuba teams to assist in the search for evidence. While no surveillance video has been recovered from the immediate area, authorities are attempting to use license plate readers to identify drivers who may have captured the incident on dash cameras. No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made. In response to the incident, New York State Senator Steve Chan has called for increased lighting along the recreational path to improve safety.
