Overview

Infrastructure development in the Brussels region has seen recent activity in both sustainable mobility and major road networks.

In September 2026, the King Baudouin Foundation awarded over €1 million through the Bikes in Brussels Awards to six projects designed to improve cycling infrastructure. These projects, which include fast cycle routes, bridges, and tunnels, aim to enhance urban safety and connectivity between Brussels and its surrounding areas.

Concurrently, a Belgian consortium named ‘R0Q’ was selected for a €1.5 billion project on the Brussels Ring in the Zaventem zone. This large-scale initiative involves the demolition and renewal of traffic interchanges in Machelen and Sint-Stevens-Woluwe to improve traffic flow and increase green spaces. The project, which includes upgrades to local roads and cycling connections, is scheduled to begin in 2027 and will be managed by the consortium for thirty years.
