Bucharest urban environmental and infrastructure initiatives
Overview
Bucharest officials have introduced several measures aimed at improving the city’s environmental quality and urban infrastructure. Mayor Ciprian Ciucu announced plans to establish a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) between 2027 and 2032, which will phase out older, polluting vehicles. The initiative seeks to target approximately 1.3 million older vehicles in the Bucharest and Ilfov region, starting with restrictions in the central area before expanding city-wide.
In tandem with environmental goals, the Bucharest General Council has updated regulations regarding sanitation, assigning sector municipalities the responsibility for cleaning “blue” street parking areas. Additionally, the city has launched various infrastructure and landscaping projects, such as the “park-city” transformation on Calea 13 Septembrie, which replaces sidewalk parking with green spaces and pedestrian improvements.
